5 Insider Secrets to Finding the Perfect Pair of Heels

From stilettos to block heels to wedges, there are almost unlimited options to complete your outfit. However, sometimes the perfect shoe is the least practical. Do we have to sacrifice fashion for function? We asked our VP of Merchandising, Jessica, for her expert take. Before joining us at GB, she led Merchandising at Cole Haan. As she puts it she worked on everything, “from design to development to getting shoes on women’s feet.” Jessica clued us in on five insider shoe secrets including the ideal heel height, closet must-haves, and her surprising tip in finding the dream fit. Read on… your feet will thank you!

1. What is the ideal heel height, and why?
I think it depends on who you ask.  High heels look amazing but are rarely comfortable.  A shoe with a slight pitch like a sliver wedge or low wedge, typically 25-40mm, is actually best for your feet.

2. What would you suggest as a professional alternative to heels?
Wedges are a classic staple and are typically much more comfortable than heels.  Over the past few years, heeled booties have emerged as a fashionable alternative to pumps and pointy toe dress flats are also a great option if you aren’t looking for height.

3. Do you have any tips to finding the right fit for you?
If you find a shoe that fits well, ask if the brand has used “the last” on any other styles. “The last” is the solid form around which a shoe is made.  Any styles or designs that share a last will have a similar toe shape, instep, heel height and, therefore, fit.

4. Are there any shoes or heels that are must-haves for your closet?
As we head into fall, booties are my go to shoe.  This fall, I’m looking for the perfect pair of flat “everyday” boots with a low chunky heel.  I’ll also invest in a more formal pair of “dress booties” that I can wear out in the evening to dress up jeans and generally in place of pumps.

5. What trends do you see happening in high heels both now and coming up for next season?
Block heels are the biggest trend while pumps are not high this season. You’ll be both on-trend and comfortable with 55mm / 2″ heels.  Block heel booties for fall and sandals for spring will also be spot on.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. These shoes are from photos submitted by our members and staffers, worn with GB items – not pictured to necessarily be reflective of the trends mentioned. We’ll pass the feedback to the team though that those types of photos would be helpful!
