For this edition, we travel to Houston, TX to feature Dawn H., an optimistic and kind-hearted mom, who’s taking her practical approach to fashion to a new stylish level. Dawn tell us about her family, the surprising items she’s fallen in love with, and what the Gwynnie Bee community means to her. For those reasons, and many more, we’re inspired by… Dawn H.!
1. Tell our readers a little bit about yourself!
I was born and raised in Houston. I married my high school sweetheart 17 years ago. We were young, optimistic, broke and ready to take on the world…and we did. We have three amazing daughters, ages 9, 11, and 14, with completely different personalities. Sometime’s it’s hard to believe they came form the same parents, but they will each take on the world in their own way.
Balancing my home and work life is not easy, but my family always comes first. I make time for myself too, spending time with my friends from high school and college. We’ve been thought so many phases of life together.
2. What inspired you to become a Gwynnnie Bee member?
I have always had trouble finding clothes that fit well. My experience was that straight sizes weren’t made for curvy girls, and plus sizes were not fitted enough for me. I was hopeful I would find clothes that fit my shape through Gwynnie Bee.
I’m am a practical person, but not afraid to pay for quality. Before GB I would wear classic pieces like solid sheath dresses and pencil skirts, and add pops of color with blouses and cardigans. I wanted to become a GB member because I loved the idea of wearing trendy pieces without having to own them. I have always hated wasting money, and clothing, on pieces I might only wear a year or two before it went out of style. I love the sustainability aspect of Gwynnie Bee. Our natural resources are better utilized when a garment is worn more than a handful of times.
3. What has your Gwynnie Bee experience been like thus far?
My experience has been great. I’ve been a member almost three years, so I’ve experienced some of the growing pains GB has been through, like the shipping delays associated with opening a new warehouse. I appreciate that GB has always acknowledged its own challenges and shows appreciation to loyal members.
I have experienced really fun and exciting innovations: the Gwynnie Bee shop, prioritizing my online closet, adding photos and size profiles to member reviews, member rewards, and Facebook videos.
This might sound cheesy, but I feel like we have grown together.
4. How has Gwynnie Bee changed the way you approach fashion?
My GB experience has been really transformative. I will try colors and patterns I never would have tried before. I am no longer afraid to take a chance and wear something outside of what I think is my comfort zone. I still wear classic shapes, but throw in some fun pieces too.
I can walk into a room full of suits looking professional and polished in a floral dress that looks like it was made for me. That is a huge confidence booster.
5. What pieces have you been most excited to receive? Has any piece surprised you with how much you love it?
I have always been excited to receive my priority items just before I needed them- a jumpsuit and party dress for a weekend in Vegas, a sharp looking sheath dress before a big work meeting, a maxi dress just in time for vacation. Strategic closeting is important, and the priority feature is great.
I was really excited to get the Julian Taylor Fuchsia Fit & Flare Dress With Keyhole. I knew the brand and that dress did not disappoint. The color, the cut, the keyhole – it is adorable, sexy, and fun. I’m excited to get anything City Chic. Every piece feels like it was made for me. The black and white brushstroke dress is my go-to office piece.
I never though I would own a leopard print dress, but it is one of my favorite pieces. I would never have had the confidence to wear a dress with sharks and skulls to work, but I did.
6. How would you describe your sense of style? What influences your fashion sense?
I think my style is still classic, but now with a trendy twist. I prefer simple jewelry to statement pieces, but I wear both. As a southern girl, denim and pearls are my favorite combination. Leather and lace is a close second.
Growing up, my fashion icons were Jacqueline Kennedy and Princess Dianna. They were beautiful women, they dressed “ladylike” but commanded respect, and they oozed class and style.
7. Who are the women who inspire you?
Growing up, I was inspired by women like Mother Teresa and Maya Angelou. I was inspired to do the right thing, serve others, have faith, and use my words and actions to inspire others. Do what is right, even when nobody is looking.
My mother taught me the importance of education, a strong work ethic, and to do something you love. She also taught me to be generous to others, because there is always someone with a harder life.
I am inspired by my friends. My closest friends have known me more of my life than not. As we go through all the phases of life together, we provide each other strength, wisdom and perspective.
I’ve been inspired by the women of Gwynnie Bee. I feel like I’ve gotten to know members and staff through Facebook and Instagram. Their body confidence has inspired me to take chances and know that beauty has no shape or size.
