Who better to inspire us here at Gwynnie Bee than our own amazing members? Each month, we’re turning the spotlight on our community to share their stories and flaunt our styles (after all, who would we rather see than the women who really wear them?). Watch this space for more incredible style and stories. If you would like to be considered for an upcoming installment of “We’re Inspired By…”, submit your unique story!

Ashlie Atkinson, award-winning theatre, film, and television actress, comedy queen, and a former member of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby, she’s also been a Gwynnie Bee member since practically the beginning. We were thrilled to catch up with her as she wraps Steve, an Off Broadway production directed by Cynthia Nixon. Hilarious, feminist and body positive… there are so many reasons why we’re inspired by Ashlie!

Tell our readers a little bit about yourself!
Ooh, um, I’m a female, I’m 38, I’m an actor in New York, I grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, I have two cats, and I live with my awesome husband in Brooklyn. I like books and swimming pools and pinball machines and roller derby and rock ‘n’ roll music. I’m a fat, mouthy feminist and I’m on your TV!

What inspired you to become a Gwynnnie Bee member?
Well, first of all, it just sounded like a lot of fun. I love new clothes, and the idea of having new clothes all the time without having to build new closets or spend a ton of money or even go shopping somewhere — I was like, “Where do I sign? When can we start?” The other catalyst for joining was that I had just started shooting a new show for FOX and we had a lot of press events and there’s definitely pressure to be fashionable and trend-aware. There are so many different opportunities to be photographed that my wardrobe was never gonna be able to keep up the pace.

What has your Gwynnie Bee experience been like thus far?
I had high expectations, but WOW has Gwynnie Bee surpassed them. I get compliments ALL THE TIME on my seemingly unending parade of cute dresses. The curatorial approach they have is great, it’s an incredibly user-friendly service, and their customer service is hands-on and badass.

How has Gwynnie Bee changed the way you approach fashion?
Before GB, I felt like I had a crush on fashion but fashion didn’t know I existed. When you’re trying to pull together awesome looks for a plus-size body, it’s easy to get really frustrated and give up. So many shopping experiences ended in tears because cool shops had no real plus options or plus stores were too conservative and matronly. But Gwynnie Bee finds the coolest looks, gives notes on fit and size, and if you pick something you don’t like, back into the blue bag with it, no harm no foul! They’ve educated me on designers, and turned me on to brands I never would have known about otherwise. And in my industry, there’s real power in walking in to meetings or auditions feeling great because you love what you’re wearing. For a fat girl, it’s almost a political act to love how you look. I wanna be on the front lines of that revolution.

What pieces have you been most excited to receive?
Has any piece surprised you with how much you love it? Oh man. So many. SO MANY. City Chic is a brand that has been a big ole surprise. Every thing I put on of theirs just fits like it was custom-tailored to my body. Also, a studded motorcycle jacket from Jaime I put into my closet on a whim in 2014 ended up becoming one of my favorite clothing items ever. We’re two years in and still going strong.

How would you describe your sense of style? What influences your fashion sense?
I can get real costumey with my fashion. I go very period piece. I had a 1950s cocktail party thing going for a minute there, but now I’m dressing a little more Steinem-esque. Big glasses, faux-fur shawl-collared coats, wide-legged pants. If I wear pants, that is, and boots. Always boots. 90% of the time if you see me on the street I’ll be wearing a Gwynnie Bee dress with black tights and boots. My mother has always had an excellent sense of style, and I learned a lot from her.

Who are the women who inspire you?
My mom, Beth Atkinson, and my sister, Leah Capel, no question. Also, my niece Sydney Capel, who is only 20 but whose work ethic is like, WHOA. I also have a solid group of ride-or-die girlfriends, and you really need that in New York City. There are guys like my husband in that crew too, as well as folks that don’t identify as a particular spot on the gender spectrum. We all have each other’s backs. I’m inspired by the people around me who are making their own work and making an art out of living in this tough, beautiful city. But if we’re talking women I haven’t met, people who inspire me to seek higher and do better? Jenji Kohan. Catherine O’Hara. Mia McKenzie. Ann Dowd (who I am friends with, but she HAD to be on this list). The girls from Broad City. Leslie Jones. Sarah Paulson. Roxane Gay. Kathy Bates. Edie Falco. Women who don’t cave to cheap shots at the disenfranchised, who work harder and longer to make smart, honest work.

This is the best interview. Also, I still have (and regularly wear) that same Jaime studded moto jacket 😀
